(U) On May 18 Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs Ambassador for Arms Control Issues Petur Thorsteinsson informed PolOff that the Icelandic Embassies in Washington and Moscow would soon be delivering diplomatic notes reporting Iceland's desire to join the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism (Refs A & B). Thorsteinsson added that although Iceland will not be attending the upcoming Global Initiative meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan due to staffing shortfalls at the MFA, the Ministry looked forward to active participation in future activities. ¶2.
